Text A
Identity theft is the world's fastest growing crime. Identity theft is when somebody steals your personal information in order to use your bank account or credit card to withdraw money, or to open new accounts or to take out loans in your name. People also steal someone else's identity for other motives, for example if they are drug traffickers or illegal immigrants. Fraudsters can steal personal information in various ways, for example by phishing, by hacking into commercial databases that contain personal information or even your own personal computer.
Text B
I was a victim of identity theft because I used a free music file-sharing program. Suddenly I was getting bills for all sorts of things and being asked to pay huge amounts of interest on a credit card I didn't even have! I was just about to start college and it couldn't have happened at a worse time. Later I found out that when I downloaded the file sharing software, I must have also downloaded a spyware program that allowed the person access to the personal information on my computer.
Text C
Try these common-sense, no-cost measures to protect against identity theft and fraud. First, guard your information online and change logins and passwords monthly. Second, be alert for phishing, and always verify that you're on a familiar website with security controls before entering personal data. Third, regularly shred outdated bank statements, bills, and anything with your personal information before throwing it into the rubbish bin or recycling. Don't forget that junk mail often includes some of your personal details.
